A new camera that is destined to revolutionize the photographic market by letting users refocus images minutes, weeks or years after they have taken a photo will make its debut on the market in 2012.
The camera, called Lytro, matches its future-thinking "living pictures" concept of photography with a radically different camera design. The Lytro looks more like a kaleidoscope than a modern-day point-and-shoot or DSLR camera, but is still able to pack in some complex technology inside its bright, toy-like oblong exterior.
"Light field photography was once only possible with 100 cameras tethered to a supercomputer in a lab," explained Lytro CEO and founder Dr. Ren Ng in an October 19 press release. "Today it’s accessible to everyone in a camera that’s small and powerful, but incredibly easy to use. Our goal is to forever change the way people take and experience pictures, and today marks our first major step."
The pocketable camera (which measures 41 x 41 x 112 mm) boasts a powerful 8x optical zoom lens with a constant f/2 aperture, a light field sensor that captures 11 million light rays of data (or "megarays" as the team behind Lytro likes to call them), and a 1.46" multitouch LCD display.
While Lytro is the only consumer camera that can change the focus in your photos after they are taken, Adobe is working towards including an enhanced "Deblur tool" in its photo-editing program Photoshop -- but don’t get too excited yet, the technology is still far from ready for a public release.
Adobe previewed the prototype technology during the recent Adobe MAX conference. The company showed how it can eliminate blurriness in existing photos by determining what type of blurs occur in the image and applying algorithms to reconstruct the photo but noted that "there is still quite a bit of development left to do before this feature is ready for prime time."

The Lytro will be available in early 2012 in two models; the 8GB Electric Blue or Graphite model which holds up to 350 photos for $399 and the 16GB Red Hot which holds up to 750 pictures for $499. Both models are available for pre-order from http://www.lytro.com now. - Relaxnews
