Design Miami/, the Global Forum for Design, is opening today November 30 until December 4, 2011, in a custom-designed structure adjacent to sister fair Art Basel Miami Beach. This year’s expanded program will see many of the world’s most prestigious galleries showcase important 20th and 21st century design, along with new works commissioned for the fair. Many works on display directly crossover with pieces on view in major museum shows in both 2011 and 2012.
“The works selected to be shown at Design Miami/ demonstrate the vast spectrum of collectible design objects,” says Marianne Goebl, Director of Design Miami/. “From French and Scandinavian Mid-Century to Korean craft to California Modernism to sculptural jewelry and cutting-edge contemporary work, the pieces selected for the gallery program are remarkable in both their breadth and diversity. Many works on display directly correlate with major museum shows from 2011 and 2012 including exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, LACMA, the V&A, the Museum of Arts and Design, MoMA, the High Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to name a few.”
Celebrating its seventh edition, Design Miami/ has become the preeminent destination for the international design community and an important source for private and museum collectors. The unparalleled quality of this year’s 28 participating galleries, a 40% increase over last year, further solidifies the fair’s status as an essential biannual forum for top-quality collectible design. The rigorous selection standards and unique vetting process for exhibiting galleries result in a gallery program that is tightly edited while still representing a balanced mix of both historic and contemporary design.
A highlight of this December’s show is the site-specific installation by Designer of the Year Award winner, UK-based architect David Adjaye. As his award commission, Adjaye will create a pavilion, entitled Genesis. Adjaye calls Genesis his first work of “giant architectural furniture” that combines structure, seating, windows and doors into a single gesture.
