VOLTA7 returns to Basel

Volta7 Art Fair runs until June 18th, 2011

Art lovers from all over the world, top-level international collectors and an engaged art audience—including representatives of major international exhibition venues and collections returnined to the Dreispitzhalle for the second year, for the seventh edition of the international art fair VOLTA.
Encouraged by the response of collectors and curators during the instances of solo presentations and the carefully considered booths in former editions, the Curatorial Committee proposed new concept for VOLTA7. A much stronger emphasis has therefore been placed on single artist presentations or on booth concepts that bring the work of two artists into dialogue with one another, thus allowing for a greater understanding of different individual practices. Out of the 70 exhibiting galleries, 16 are presenting solo shows, 35 are focusing on a dialogue between artists and 19 galleries have curated small and intimate exhibitions with 3 or maximum 4 artists. Together with the reduction in exhibitor numbers, the intended result will be a much more focused event, less a trade fair and more a series of small exhibitions.
Many of the artists slated for exhibit have recently been awarded prizes after their selection by the Curatorial Committee, including photographer Thorsten Brinkmann (artfinder Galerie Mathias Guntner, Hamburg), Leipizig-based painter Jochen Plogsties (ASPN, Leipzig), and American Frankfurtbased conceptual artist Adrian Williams (VOGES Gallery, Frankfurt). Meanwhile, LARMgalleri (Copenhagen), who will be undertaking the daunting task of one solo show per day, will open with new works by Italian painter Nicola Samori, recently announced as included in the Italian Pavilion at the coming 54th Venice Biennale.  Internationally acclaimed and award winning  Arik Levy will present painting and sculptures with Alon Segev Gallery from Tel-Aviv.

True to its character of identifying new trends, VOLTA7 returns to the Dreispitzhalle. The environs in the Dreispitz Areal has grown rapidly from an industrial former warehouse district into the envisaged artistically-vibrant neighborhood. Already known for the Schaulager contemporary art space, in the last year alone the Dreispitz has seen the opening of an entire building dedicated to artists’ studios and several new permanent art spaces, including House of Electronic Arts (Haus-ek), an exhibition hall dedicated to new media; OSLO 10, a cutting-edge art center under the Berlin-based Swiss team of former Kunsthalle Basel curator Simone Neuenschwander and former curator of the Alte Fabrik in
Rapperswil-Jona, Christiane Rekade; Radio X, Basel’s alternative radio station; and the photo gallery, OSLO 8.
VOLTA7 at Dreispitzhalle is only 7 minutes from the central train station SBB by public transport or 5 minutes by car; 9 minutes with Tram 10 or 11 from Bankverein (Kunsthalle/Kunstmuseum) and with direct VOLTA7 shuttles running from Art Basel and Liste with no other stops, reaching the fair is effortless. With a 450-place car park one block away, the venue also offers easier parking than previous locations.
